Synchronized Knuckle Cracking

Ever wondered what it would sound like if a few thousand people cracked their knuckles at the same time? And in a room with good acoustics?

Well, here it is.

As a fan of knuckle cracking, I approve.

By the way, did you know that it is completely unsubstantiated that knuckle cracking can have ill effects, such as arthritis?

In fact, a certain Dr. Donald L. Unger of Thousand Oaks, California, USA, received a Medicine Ig Nobel prize in 2009 for his 1998 paper titled "Does knuckle cracking lead to arthritis of the fingers?".

In it, he investigated a possible cause of arthritis of the fingers, by diligently cracking the knuckles of his left hand — but never cracking the knuckles of his right hand — every day for more than sixty (60) years. He found none.

Now, that's devotion.

Can You... Bear To Watch?

Sorry about that. Couldn't resist.

A couple of years ago (wow, time is passing so annoyingly fast...) I posted a video of a Canadian runner's encounter with a Grizzly bear. Fortunately for him, the bear wasn't interested.

Here are two more videos of people getting too close to bears.

First, this guy obviously has balls of steel.
Also... wait for it...

Now, this second one is just plain stupid. A definite nope in my book.
All sorts of wrong could have gone down.

Amazing Waterspout Footage from Greece

Amazing footage of a waterspout (tornado over water) caught in 2009 by a tourist at the beautiful beach of Egremni on the Greek island of Lefkada.

Don't be fooled though.
65%-80% of tornadoes worldwide occur in the USA.
Hank Green, host of the SciShow explains "why tornadoes hate America".

This'll Increase Your Appetite

After stumbling upon this rather satisfying ad by Marks & Spencer:

I found these four equally satisfying ads made by the same people, this time for French coffee company Carte Noire.

Enjoy!

A Different Type of Mexican Standoff

Freddie Wong collaborates with the comedic duo of Key and Peele to produce this take on the Mexican standoff.

("What's a Mexican standoff?", I hear you say)

Watch for some guest stars you might recognize (if you've been following this blog) at the end.

Humans Need Not Apply

Youtube know-it-all C.G.P. Grey

(just kidding, his videos are informative and well-researched)

discusses, in his newest video, the future of human labour, in light of the rapid advancement of technology (informatics and robotics in particular) that threatens to extinguish a wide array of jobs, without at the same time creating enough new ones.

Immense food for thought.

Let's hope that at least some of the people elected to govern have began devising 99%-friendly plans for the major social changes that are coming.

There will surely be centers of power which will attempt to sustain the status quo, but how will the capitalist/consumerist model be able to continue existing when a huge percentage of the population won't be earning wages that would allow them to spend?

Unless everyone (regardless of their employment status) is provided a basic income that would allow them to at least survive and why not, do even more...

Technology itself (e.g. cheap, abundant, clean energy - cheap 3D printers capable of reproducing almost anything - etc.) might (and hopefully will) solve many of the upcoming problems.

Also, with all this advancement of computers and robots, let's hope Skynet doesn't become self-aware. But if it does, let's hope it likes us.

Kiwi!

"Kiwi!" is an animation created in 2006 by then New York City School of Visual Arts student Dony Permedi for his Master's thesis.

It is an internet classic with more than 36 million views on Youtube.

Definitely worth the watch (it may not be in HD, but it has substance).

Sudden Hailstorm on Siberian Beach

Yeah... I've got Siberia associated with many words in my mind (cold, empty, huge, etc.), but beach is definitely not one of them.

In any case, I suppose if you live in the large Siberian city of Novosibirsk (third most populous city in Russia), and are thus thousands of kilometres from the nearest decent beach, then the banks of the river Ob might sound like a good idea for a warm July day (Novosibirsk has an average high of 25.4oC in July actually).

So, just a few weeks ago, river beach goers were having fun at the river Ob when suddenly a severe hailstorm erupted.

That lady at the end... what was she thinking?

The "beach" is here by the way (or check out the image below).

From what I can see Novosibirsk is connected to Chalkidiki via Astra Airlines every summer.
I recommend to the people of Novosibirsk to take that flight and forget Ob beach.
