10 Hours of Walking in NYC

A couple of months ago, this video was uploaded on Youtube showing a woman being harassed (or "harassed" depending on your view) while walking for 10 hours in the streets of New York.

Although it did manage to convey its message (whether you agree with it or not), the video also spawned a variety of parodies and copycats.

Here are perhaps the best:

3 Hours of Walking in NYC as a (Model) Man

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a(n) (Average) Man

10 Hours of Princess Leia Walking in NYC

A lot more can be found with a quick search on Youtube,
such as 10 Hours of Walking:

in NYC as a Jew,
in NYC as a Lamborghini,
in Los Angeles as a Mime (wat?),
in Skyrim as a Woman in Skimpy Armor,
etc.

Leeroy Jenkins (Alright... Let's Do This!)

This is nearly ten years old, but I came across it again recently and thought I'd post it.
For many (particularly MMPORG players) it is part of internet history.

I'll let Wikipedia explain this better, since I'm not an MMPORG person myself.

"The video... features a group of World of Warcraft players discussing a detailed battle strategy for the next encounter while one of their party members, Leeroy, is away from his computer. Their risky plan is needed specifically to help Leeroy, yet is ruined when Leeroy returns and, ignorant of the strategy, immediately charges headlong into battle shouting his own name in a stylized battle cry. His companions rush to help, but Leeroy's actions ruin the meticulous plan, and all of the group members are killed."

 Here's the original video:

It fascinates me that there is someone on hand who can do a quick number crunch (aka probability of success) for the plan (and calculate it to 32,33%).

The video became a viral hit within the WoW community and beyond, and spawned various parodies and reproductions.

I particularly like the one below, which features former football player (and for more than a decade now actor) Vinnie Jones.

Oh well... at least he had chicken (or he ain't chicken) (both work).

Update! (25/4/14)

Even the US Air Force uses it when a rescue mission is required.

He Had One Shot

As the great 20th century poet guy M&M's Eminem once said:

"...if you had one shot, one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted, one moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?"

He continued by adding that:

"You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime"

And let's not forget:

"Mom's spaghetti"

Well, this Irish dude had one shot and he seized it.

He became a meme with just three seconds of fame.

What Does the Fox Say?

I know this is old for many out there (it came out early September), but I discovered it just yesterday. 288 million views and still going (Gangnam Style, by the way, has reached 1.85 billion).

I kinda like it actually. Catchy tune.

Thankfully, it doesn't take itself seriously.
It is by Ylvis, a Norwegian comedic duo (they are in fact brothers) and is intended as a critique/parody of contemporary club/pop music.

Agreed. Change the lyrics and this could have easily been a hit by Pitbull or Katy Perry.

Another wonderful internet creation sees He-Man sing the 4 Non Blondes 1993 hit "What's Up"

People Who Became Classic Internet Memes

Let's go back to the "classics".

Here are three cases of people who become internet celebrities and whom, surprisingly, I haven't featured here previously.

Starting with this lady, who became an internet sensation after she described her harrowing escape from a fire.

1) Sweet Brown - Ain't Nobody Got Time For That!

This guy also became famous following an interview on a local news channel.

2) Antoine Dodson - They're Raping Everybody Out Here!

Antoine Dodson capitalized on his success by selling t-shirts and merchandise containing his quotes, as well as receiving royalties from the "Bed Intruder Song" sold through iTunes.

In January 2010, Youtube user Hungrybear9562 (real name Paul Vasquez) uploaded a video of himself sounding rather ecstatic at the sight of a double rainbow at Yosemite National Park.
The video was "discovered" and went viral 7 months later.

3) Hungrybear9562 - Double Rainbow (All The Way)

Harlem Shake

I was just surfing the internet, just passing the time and I came across this:

And I'm like, "What is this? I don't even" and  "WTF did I just watch?".

A few days ago I had read that this... thing called Harlem Shake is gaining popularity and might be the new Gangnam Style, but I didn't really pay much attention.

Apparently (as I learnt through Know Your Meme), Harlem Shake (or as I like to call it, Coloterrorista), created by an artist named Baauer, was uploaded on Youtube on August 23rd 2012 (although there exists an even earlier upload of the same from May 10th 2012).

Apart from the fans of that particular music genre (trap), no one else really noticed it.

Then, on January 30th 2013, Youtube user DizastaMusic (aka Filthy Frank) uploaded this video:

It went viral, spawning an ever increasing number of imitators with all kinds of people doing their own versions. Wikipedia describes the "script" of these videos very nicely:

"Various videos have since been released that start with a lone dancer (usually wearing a helmet/mask of some kind) dancing to the build up of the song while other people go about their normal business. Once the build up reaches a climax and the song "drops", the video cuts to the same setting but with a bunch of people twerking, jerking, spinning, humping, and bumping. Other dances are purely improvisational."

From what I've seen, some of the main motifs are (in the same video): masks, helmets, bodysuits, thrusting, spazzing-shaking, punching dolls, staying totally still and generally all types of improvisations.

Below are a few video compilations of Harlem Shake:

Only the future will tell if it's going to be the Gangnam Style of 2013.

Try Getting These Out of Your Head!

Badgers Badgers Badgers

Narwhals Narwhals

Badgers. One of the earlier viral (flash) videos.

Find more songified animals at Weebls Stuff's (or is it Weebls' Stuff) channel, but I reckon these two are the best.

The TechnoViking

This clip (from 2000) went viral in late 2007 and become an internet classic.

It would be interesting (not to mention hilarious) to have a Technoviking vs Grandpa Raver dance-off.

Know Your Meme has more info on the Technoviking.

And here is the original clip from 2000 without the captions (just close all the annotations).

Gangnam Style

Recently, the internets have been on fire with this song, performed by South Korean artist (rapper) PSY.

From Wikipedia: "Gangnam Style" is a Korean language colloquialism that refers to a luxurious lifestyle associated with the Gangnam district, an affluent and trendy area of Seoul.

Looks great LIVE too!

(amazing crowd by the way, enjoying the show, having fun, not squishing each other to death like you see elsewhere...)

Also, Gangnam Style a cappella (or with natural sound if you prefer)

Where the Hell is Matt Now? (2012)

Here is Matt's new video.

And here's his most popular video and the one that made him famous from 2008.

And here is Matt explaining how he got people to dance with him.

Trololo man

A classic internet meme.

On another note, nothing to do with the video, but I think it is about time some site(s) seriously challenged Youtube. Monopolies are always fascist in nature (such as the new changes to the worse Youtube has implemented).

Edit (27/07/12): Unfortunately he passed away recently.
