Airplanes Landing In Strong Crosswind Conditions

A Thomson Airways Boeing 767 encounters a 35-knot (~65km/h) crosswind during landing at Birmingham airport (BHX).

The pilots (and the landing gear) handle it pretty nicely.





It would be interesting to know how it felt for the passengers.

In the end, after two failed attempts at landing in Birmingham, they decided to head to Gatwick.

What Condition 1 Weather in Antarctica Looks Like

We're expecting some pretty bad weather for the next two days here where I am.
Temperatures are going to drop significantly, falling to -25oC at some point.
In Minnesota it's going to reach -50oC, but -25oC is already too much for someone not used to it.

At least the situation isn't going to be like what they face in Antarctica during condition 1 weather.

Condition 1 weather, as I've learnt from Wikipedia, means:

Windspeed over 55 knots (60 mph / 96kmh)

Visibility less than 100 feet (30 meters)

Wind chill below −100 °F (−73 °C)

Description: Dangerous conditions; outside travel is not permitted.

I'm surprised they're separated from the outside environment by just two pretty normal-looking doors.

Skilled Ferry Captain

This is a video from April 7th 2013, showing the very skilled captain of the ferry "Adamantios Korais", under quite bad weather conditions, coming into the port of the Greek island of Sikinos, unloading-loading, and leaving within 7.5 minutes.

Everybody waiting to board (especially the lady with the bags and coat) must have got drenched. And imagine the rest of the trip with the ship going up and down. Gives me nausea just thinking about it.

According to the video description, this is footage from an airport in northern Spain.

Of course, for the airport to be open, it means that these conditions are considered acceptable for a safe landing. Still... I would definitely not like to be a passenger in one of these planes...
