BBC Asks Wrong "Guy's" Opinion

This is hilarious. It is so rare for the BBC to make such a mistake.

Texan City Ice Avalanche

So... this thing can happen, and can obviously be very dangerous for unsuspecting passers-by.

Felix Baumgartner's Record Breaking Jump (in HD)

"On 14 October 2012, Felix Baumgartner flew approximately 39kilometres (24mi) into the stratosphere over New Mexico, United States, in a helium balloon before free falling in a pressure suit and then parachuting to Earth. The total jump, from leaving the capsule to landing on the ground, lasted approximately ten minutes. While the free fall was initially expected to last between five and six minutes, Baumgartner deployed his parachute after 4 minutes and 19 seconds.  

Reaching 1,357.64 km/h (843.6 mph)—Mach 1.25—Baumgartner became the first human to break the sound barrier without any form of engine power. Preliminary measurements show Baumgartner also broke two other world records. With a final altitude of 38,969 m (127,851 ft) (23.3884 miles), Baumgartner broke the unofficial record for the highest manned balloon flight of 37,640 m (123,491 ft) previously set by Nicholas Piantanida. He also broke the record for the highest altitude jump, set in 1960 by retired USAF Colonel Joseph Kittinger, who was Baumgartner's mentor and capsule communicator at mission control."

A Bad Lip Reading of the NFL

So, on Sunday, Super Bowl XLVIII will be played between the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks. That is number 48 for anyone who doesn't know how to count in Roman numerals (which should be about 99% of the US population, and yet for some weird reason that is exactly how they write it every year).

How interesting. Two historyless teams companies franchises, which can relocate at a moment's notice if they smell profit (we've seen it happening in the NBA with teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and New Orleans Hornets Pelicans ^{thanks for proving my point} appearing out of nowhere) will battle it out for who will be the winner of this year's four month long season (yes, four month long, September to December, with only a few teams continuing in January, playing a maximum of three games in that month, before two play at the Super Bowl in February). When I asked a colleague why the season is so short, I got the reply that the game takes its toll on players so they can't play more than that. Yes. They play 16 games in 4 months the poor little millionaires. Their fancy helmets and shoulder pads are just decorative it seems.

What's even stupider is that many people can't wait for this spectacle to begin so that they can watch... the advertisements. Each 30-second clip costs 4 million dollars this year.  

I don't really care about this crap.

Regardless, Bad Lip Reading came out of its hibernation recently with a new clip inspired by the NFL. Their previous clip had come out around this time last year. Here they are both. Enjoy.

Apparently, stupid and crappy beards (many of the Amish type) are in fashion with these players. Too many knocks on the head obviously. I'm beginning to believe that it really does take a toll.

The Ice Balls of Lake Michigan

It is a particularly cold night here and I thought I'd post something related.

Just a couple of weeks ago, during the previous appearance of the polar vortex, someone posted these ice balls that had appeared in lake Michigan.




Apparently, they are created when "small fragments of floating ice act like seeds, with layers upon layers of supercooled lake water freezing around them as the balls churn in the waves. Wind then pushes the ice concretions onshore."

Look At This Very Clever Dog

I just needs to have the chicken nuggets.

"Lucy is always getting into trouble. Everyday when we got home the chair is moved and little foot prints are on the counter. Sometimes food would be missing. I always wondered how she moved the chair. A few weeks before we had company over. I had made a filet roast. We were in the other room. I was looking at my friend his jaw was wide open. He says dude your dog is in the oven. I ran into the kitchen. Lucy was on the large oven door, chowing down on our dinner. So a few weeks later I was cleaning out the freezer found some old chicken nuggets. I had decided to set up Lucy. I set up the camera on a tripod pointing at the small toaster oven. Put the chicken nuggets in the oven turned the oven on for 12 minutes and left for the grocery store. 40 minutes later, I came home with pan on the floor. Gotcha !!!!!" 

Of course there's a slight chance she might have caused a fire, but... she's so smart that she would have put it out. Right???

What Condition 1 Weather in Antarctica Looks Like

We're expecting some pretty bad weather for the next two days here where I am.
Temperatures are going to drop significantly, falling to -25oC at some point.
In Minnesota it's going to reach -50oC, but -25oC is already too much for someone not used to it.

At least the situation isn't going to be like what they face in Antarctica during condition 1 weather.

Condition 1 weather, as I've learnt from Wikipedia, means:

Windspeed over 55 knots (60 mph / 96kmh)

Visibility less than 100 feet (30 meters)

Wind chill below −100 °F (−73 °C)

Description: Dangerous conditions; outside travel is not permitted.

I'm surprised they're separated from the outside environment by just two pretty normal-looking doors.

Ship Cook Rescued After Spending 60 Hours Inside Sunk Capsized Tugboat

Story from Reuters:

"After two days trapped in freezing cold water and breathing from an air bubble in an upturned tugboat under the ocean, Harrison Okene was sure he was going to die. Then a torch light pierced the darkness.

Ship's cook Okene, 29, was on board the Jascon-4 tugboat when it capsized on May 26 due to heavy Atlantic ocean swells around 30 km (20 miles) off the coast of Nigeria, while stabilising an oil tanker filling up at a Chevron platform. Of the 12 people on board, divers recovered 10 dead bodies while a remaining crew member has not been found.

Somehow Okene survived, breathing inside a four foot high bubble of air as it shrunk in the waters slowly rising from the ceiling of the tiny toilet and adjoining bedroom where he sought refuge, until two South African divers eventually rescued him."

The actual depth at which the upside down tugboat settled was only 30m, but still that would have been enough to cause him decompression sickness if he came right up.

It's an amazing story. The ordeal this guy went through. For more than two days, he was in total darkness, partially immersed in cold ocean water, without food or water, inside an air pocket he had no idea how long would last, not knowing if anyone was looking for him. The things that must have gone through his mind...

Here is the amazing video of his discovery and rescue. It's worth watching from the beginning. Apparently, the diver's squeaky voice is due to the fact that they breath a mix of oxygen and helium.
